Butterflies and moths make up the order Lepidoptera, Greek for scale wing. The color on a wing comes from thousands of tiny scales that rub off like dust. A caterpillar sheds its skin several times as it grows, and each stage between molts is called an instar. A butterfly tastes with sensors on its feet, which is how a female checks a leaf before she lays an egg on it.
Monarch caterpillars eat only milkweed, which makes them bitter and poisonous to birds. Each fall, monarchs from the eastern United States and Canada fly as far as 3,000 miles to the oyamel fir forests in the mountains of central Mexico, where millions cluster on the same trees. The generation that makes the trip lives about eight months; its parents lived only a few weeks.
