A ladybug is a beetle, and its round shell is a pair of hard wing covers called elytra that lift so the thin flying wings can unfold. The bright colors are a warning. Squeeze one and it oozes a bitter yellow fluid from its leg joints, which birds learn to avoid. The spots do not show its age; a ladybug keeps the same pattern its whole adult life, and in fall many huddle together in a cluster to wait out the cold.
Gardeners prize them because both adults and larvae eat aphids by the thousand. In 1888 the orange groves of California were dying from a pest called the cottony cushion scale, and a government entomologist shipped the vedalia beetle over from Australia to eat it. Within about two years the scale was under control, one of the first great successes of using one insect to fight another.
