Every adult insect has six legs and a body in three parts: head, thorax and abdomen. That is how to tell one from a spider, which has eight legs and two body parts and belongs to a different class of arthropod. Most insects have two pairs of wings, though fleas and silverfish have none. A young insect grows by splitting and shedding its exoskeleton, a step called a molt.
Insects were the first animals to fly, more than 300 million years ago, and some early ones were huge: Meganeura, a relative of the dragonfly, had wings over two feet across. Today the periodical cicada of the eastern United States spends 13 or 17 years underground as a nymph, and then millions climb out in the same few weeks.
