Beetles Word Search

Forty beetle words: the sacred scarab, the stag beetle with its antlers, giants like the Hercules and the Goliath, the glowing firefly, the boll weevil, the bombardier and the ladybug, all members of the order Coleoptera.

In ancient Egypt the dung beetle rolling its ball across the sand stood for Khepri, the god who rolled the sun across the sky, and scarab amulet charms were carved by the thousand. The bombardier beetle defends itself by mixing two chemicals in its abdomen and firing a boiling spray with a pop. A firefly makes cold light with a chemical called luciferin.

The boll weevil crossed from Mexico into Texas around 1892 and spread through the cotton fields of the South. Farmers in Enterprise, Alabama, switched to peanuts and did so well that in 1919 the town put up a monument to the beetle. Charles Darwin collected beetles as a student at Cambridge and once popped one into his mouth to free a hand for a third.
