Ants talk mostly by smell. A worker that finds food lays a scent trail home, and the ants that follow it add to the trail until the food is gone. Leafcutter ants of the American tropics do not eat the leaves they carry; they chew them into a bed for a fungus they farm, and the fungus feeds the colony. Honeypot ants store sweet liquid in the swollen bellies of living workers, who hang from the ceiling of a chamber.
When the rivers of their South American home flood, fire ant colonies link legs and float as a living raft, with the queen and young in the middle. The biologist E. O. Wilson spent his career on ants and shared a Pulitzer Prize in 1991 for The Ants, written with Bert Holldobler. The study of ants has its own name, myrmecology, from the Greek word for ant.
