This invertebrates puzzle sorts animals without a backbone into their groups: the arthropod, mollusk, cnidarian, echinoderm, annelid and sponge, with members like the octopus, sea star, earthworm and centipede.
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck coined the word invertebrate in the 1790s, while he was in charge of the insects and worms at the natural history museum in Paris. More than nine in ten animal species belong here. The arthropods alone, the insects, spiders, crabs and centipedes, wear their skeleton on the outside as an exoskeleton and must molt it to grow.
Mollusks show the widest range of body plans, from a garden slug to a giant squid. An octopus has three hearts and blue blood, colored by copper rather than iron, and most of its nerve cells are in its eight arms. A snail scrapes up food with a radula, a tongue covered in rows of tiny teeth. Echinoderms such as the sea star and sea urchin move on hundreds of small tube feet worked by water pressure.
