Invasive Species Word Search

This invasive species puzzle names some of the worst offenders in North America and beyond: kudzu, the zebra mussel, the cane toad, the Burmese python, the lionfish and the starling, and how they travel, in ballast water, the aquarium trade and the firewood people carry.

An introduced species becomes invasive when it spreads and causes harm, usually because it left its predators and diseases behind. Cane toads were brought to Queensland, Australia, in 1935 to eat beetles in the sugar cane fields. They ignored the beetles, and their poison now kills the native snakes, lizards and quolls that try to eat them. Kudzu was planted across the American South in the 1930s to hold soil against erosion and now covers whole hillsides.

Zebra mussels reached the Great Lakes in the ballast water of ships from Europe and were first found in Lake St Clair in 1988. They clog water intake pipes and filter out so much plankton that native mussels go hungry. Starlings in North America trace back to about sixty birds set loose in Central Park, New York, in 1890; their descendants now live across the continent, from Alaska to Mexico.
