This five senses word search names all five, sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, with the body parts that do the work, the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin, and the words we use for what they tell us.
Your tongue picks up five basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. Umami, the savory taste of broth and cheese, was named in 1908 by Kikunae Ikeda, a chemist in Tokyo, who traced it to a substance in seaweed soup. Most of what we call flavor comes from smell, which is why food tastes flat when you have a cold. The taste buds on your tongue wear out and are replaced every week or two.
Each sense sends signals along nerves to the brain, which makes sense of them. The pupil of the eye grows wider in the dark to let in more light. The eardrum shakes when sound hits it and passes the motion to three tiny bones, one of them the smallest bone in the body. Louis Braille, blinded in an accident at age three, was fifteen when he worked out his alphabet of raised dots in 1824, read with the fingertips.
