Ecosystems Word Search

This ecosystems puzzle holds the unit's vocabulary: habitat, niche, population and community, the abiotic parts like sunlight, the producer, consumer and decomposer, and the kinds of symbiosis.

The British ecologist Arthur Tansley coined the word ecosystem in 1935 to mean the living things in a place together with the water, soil, air and light around them. Relationships hold it together. In mutualism both partners gain, as with a bee and a flower; in commensalism one gains and the other is unaffected; in parasitism one lives at the expense of the other.

Some species matter far more than their numbers suggest. Robert Paine pulled sea stars off a stretch of rocky shore in Washington in the 1960s and watched mussels crowd out most of the other life there; he called the sea star a keystone species. Gray wolves returned to Yellowstone in 1995 after about seventy years away. Elk changed where they grazed, willows and aspens grew back along some streams, and beavers had more to build with.
