A cel is a sheet of celluloid, and for most of a century it was how animation physically worked. The background was painted once, the moving parts were inked and painted onto clear sheets, and each sheet was laid over the same background and photographed one frame at a time. Studios shot through hundreds of thousands of them per feature, then washed most of them to reuse the plastic, which is why originals now sell for a great deal.

The storyboard was invented to stop that being wasted. Disney animators in the early 1930s began pinning rough sketches to a wall in sequence so the whole studio could see whether a scene worked before anyone drew it properly, and the idea spread out of animation into live-action film, advertising and software design. Slapstick is older still, named for the hinged wooden bat that cracked loudly when it struck without hurting anyone.
