This Mickey Mouse word search holds forty names from the mouse's world: Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck, Clarabelle and the villain Pete, along with Steamboat Willie, the sorcerer from Fantasia and the white gloves.
Mickey exists because Walt Disney lost another character. In 1928 the distributor Charles Mintz took over Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, which Disney had been making for Universal, and hired away most of his animators. Ub Iwerks, the one top animator who stayed, drew the new mouse. Disney wanted to call him Mortimer; the story goes that his wife Lillian talked him into Mickey instead.
Plane Crazy was the first Mickey cartoon made, but it found no buyer as a silent film, so Steamboat Willie, made with synchronized sound, was the first one released. Walt Disney did Mickey's voice himself until 1947. The white gloves arrived in 1929 so his hands would show up against his black body. In Fantasia in 1940 Mickey plays the sorcerer's apprentice who enchants a broom to carry water, to music written by Paul Dukas in 1897.
