Anime Word Search
This anime word search holds forty words from Japanese animation and its fans: manga, otaku, cosplay, chibi, mecha and isekai, Studio Ghibli and Totoro, and the shows that crossed oceans, from Astro Boy to Sailor Moon.
Anime is the Japanese word for animation, cut down from the English. Osamu Tezuka, a doctor turned cartoonist, brought his manga Astro Boy to television in 1963 as a weekly series, and his small studio worked out cheap tricks, such as reusing drawings and moving only a mouth, that let a team finish a new episode every week. The large eyes that became the anime look trace back to Tezuka, who grew up on Disney and Fleischer cartoons.
Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and the producer Toshio Suzuki founded Studio Ghibli in 1985, and Totoro, the forest spirit from My Neighbor Totoro, became the studio's logo. Spirited Away won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003, the first anime film to win it. In Japan the voice actors, called seiyu, have fan clubs of their own, and isekai, meaning another world, is the name for stories in which a hero wakes up in a fantasy realm.
