Four letters is where spelling patterns start to show. Some words open with two consonants blended together - the fl in flag, the fr in frog, the dr in drum. Some end in ck: duck, rock, sock. Others hold two vowels that make one sound, the oa in boat, coat and goat, the oo in book and moon, the ai in rain, the ee in tree. And bike, cake, kite and rose all end in the silent e that changes the vowel in front of it.
Wolf keeps an old habit in its plural: wolves, with the f turned to a v, the same way leaf becomes leaves. Duck is named for what the bird does. The Old English word behind it meant a diver, and it comes from the same root as the verb in duck your head.
