Biomes Word Search
This biomes puzzle covers the major land and water biomes: tundra, taiga, desert, grassland, savanna, chaparral, coral reef and estuary, with the permafrost and precipitation that decide which one grows where.
A biome is set mostly by two numbers, average temperature and yearly precipitation. The taiga, also called the boreal forest, is the largest land biome and runs in a belt across Canada, Scandinavia and Russia. North of it the trees give out and the tundra begins, where a layer of permafrost a few feet down stays frozen all year and roots cannot go deep.
Altitude does what latitude does. When Alexander von Humboldt climbed Chimborazo in Ecuador in 1802, he saw the plants change in bands on the way up, from tropical forest at the bottom to alpine grassland and bare rock near the snow line, much as they change from the equator toward the poles. The chaparral of California, with its dry summers and shrubs that sprout back after fire, has cousins around the Mediterranean and in Chile, South Africa and southwest Australia.
