The teddy bear is named for Theodore Roosevelt, who refused in 1902 to shoot a black bear that guides had tied to a tree in Mississippi. Winnie the Pooh takes his name from Winnipeg, a black bear at the London Zoo that A. A. Milne's son loved to visit. In winter a black bear can spend months in its den without eating, drinking or passing waste, and a mother gives birth there to cubs that weigh under a pound.
