Animal Adaptations Word Search
This animal adaptations puzzle mixes body features and behaviors: camouflage, mimicry, blubber, webbed feet, quills and talons, plus hibernation, migration and echolocation, with the animals that use them.
Teachers split adaptations into two kinds. A structural adaptation is part of the body, like the thick blubber of a seal or the hollow guard hairs and black skin of a polar bear. A behavioral one is something the animal does, such as a ground squirrel going into hibernation or an arctic fox digging a den in the snow. A camel's hump stores fat, not water, and the camel can live off it for days when food is scarce.
Some adaptations took a long time to find. Donald Griffin and Robert Galambos showed around 1940 that bats find their way and their food by sound, and Griffin named it echolocation in 1944. In the late 1960s Arthur DeVries found that fish in the waters around Antarctica, which stay colder than 32 degrees Fahrenheit, keep from freezing by making antifreeze proteins that stop ice crystals from growing in their blood.
