Numbers Word Search

The list for this puzzle is numbers written out as words - eleven, fifteen, forty, hundred, thousand - plus the ordinals first, second and third. Free to print as a PDF, or play online.

Eleven and twelve are the two that never fit the pattern. Both are Old English compounds meaning one left and two left, as in one and two left over after you have counted ten on your fingers. From thirteen onward English gives up and simply says three-ten, four-ten, five-ten, which is all the -teen ending is.

The ordinals are just as uneven. Third, fourth and fifth are built straight from their numbers. First and second are not: first comes from an old superlative meaning foremost, and second was borrowed from the Latin secundus, following, pushing out the Old English word for it, which was simply other.

The free PDF works for a math or a spelling lesson, and online each child gets a board of their own.
