World War 1 Word Search
This World War 1 word search holds forty words from the Great War of 1914 to 1918: the trenches of the Western Front, the Somme and Verdun, the Lusitania, the first tank, and the red poppy of Flanders fields.
On June 28, 1914, a Bosnian Serb student shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, in Sarajevo. Within six weeks a chain of alliances had pulled in Germany and Russia, France and Britain. In the west the armies dug in, and two lines of trenches ran from the Swiss border to the North Sea for most of the war. The first day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916, cost the British army about 57,000 casualties, the worst day in its history.
A German submarine sank the liner Lusitania in 1915, killing 128 Americans. The United States joined the war in April 1917, after Germany went back to sinking ships without warning and the Zimmermann telegram offered Mexico an alliance. The guns stopped at 11 o'clock on November 11, 1918, the armistice still marked by Veterans Day and Remembrance Day.
