Whales and Dolphins Word Search

This whales and dolphins word search lists forty names from the ocean's mammals: the blue whale and the humpback, the orca, beluga and narwhal, the bottlenose dolphin, and the blowhole, baleen and fluke that set them apart from fish.

The blue whale is the largest animal known to have lived, close to 100 feet long and heavier than any dinosaur, and it lives on krill, shrimp-like animals a couple of inches long. It catches them through baleen, plates made of keratin, the same material as fingernails. Male humpbacks sing long, patterned songs that can last 20 minutes and repeat for hours. Roger Payne's 1970 album Songs of the Humpback Whale sold widely and helped build support for ending commercial whaling.

The orca is the largest member of the dolphin family. A narwhal's tusk is a tooth, usually the left one, that grows in a spiral through its upper lip and can pass eight feet. Dolphins find food by echolocation: they send out clicks through the fatty melon on the forehead and listen for the echo. In Herman Melville's Moby Dick, published in 1851, the white whale is a sperm whale, the same animal that produces ambergris, once prized in perfume.
