A coral is an animal. Each polyp is a small soft body with a ring of tentacles, and thousands of them together lay down a skeleton of limestone, adding up over centuries to a reef. Their colors come from algae living inside them, which make sugar from sunlight and share it. When the water stays too warm, the coral pushes the algae out and turns white, which is called bleaching. Parrotfish bite off chunks of coral, grind them up and pass them as fine sand, so a good share of the white sand on tropical beaches has been through a parrotfish.
Charles Darwin guessed in the 1830s how atolls form: a reef grows around a volcanic island, the island slowly sinks, and the reef keeps building upward until only a ring of coral is left around a lagoon. Drilling in the Marshall Islands in the 1950s hit volcanic rock deep beneath the reef and proved him right.
