Run a hand along a shark from tail to head and it feels like sandpaper. The skin is covered in denticles, tiny scales built like teeth. The real teeth sit in rows and keep moving forward, so a lost tooth is replaced within days, and one shark can go through thousands in a lifetime. Around the snout are jelly-filled pores called ampullae of Lorenzini, named for the Italian doctor who described them in 1678. They sense the faint electric field of a hidden fish's muscles.
The whale shark is the biggest fish in the sea, around 40 feet long, and it eats some of the smallest food, straining plankton through its gills. A shark pup is born able to swim off and feed on its own. Peter Benchley's novel Jaws came out in 1974, and the film a year later made the great white the most feared animal on any beach, though scientists say people are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way round.
