The older words describe the horse arrangement rather than the vehicle. A cabriolet was a light two-wheeler pulled by one horse, and the word shortened to cab long before engines existed. A caravan was a group traveling together across a desert, not a thing towed behind a car. Almost every modern transport word is a borrowed older one.

The oldest word in this list is probably canoe, which came into English from the Caribbean Arawak through Spanish in the 1500s. The newest are compounds nobody needed until recently, and they follow the same pattern: describe the job, then shorten it.
