The Outsiders Word Search
This Outsiders word search holds forty words from S. E. Hinton's novel: Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry, Johnny, Dally, the Greasers and the Socs, the blue Mustang, the rumble and the old church.
Susan Eloise Hinton started the book at fifteen in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where it is set, and was still a teenager when it came out in 1967. Her publisher printed only her initials so that reviewers would not dismiss a book about teenage boys written by a girl. The story is told by Ponyboy Curtis, fourteen, who lives with his two older brothers after their parents die in a car crash.
After Johnny kills a Soc named Bob to stop him from drowning Ponyboy in a park fountain, the two boys hide in an empty church in the country. Ponyboy recites the Robert Frost poem Nothing Gold Can Stay. Johnny, badly burned pulling children from the church when it catches fire, tells him from a hospital bed to stay gold. The book closes with Ponyboy starting an English theme that opens with the novel's own first line.
