The Odyssey Word Search
This Odyssey word search gathers forty words from Homer's epic of the long way home: Odysseus, Penelope, Telemachus, the Cyclops, Circe, Calypso, the Sirens, Scylla and the great bow.
The poem runs to twenty-four books of Greek verse and picks up ten years after the fall of Troy, with Odysseus still not home. Trapped in the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus, he gives his name as Nobody, so that when the blinded giant shouts for help, his neighbors hear that nobody is hurting him. Polyphemus is a son of Poseidon, and the sea god keeps Odysseus from home for years. Calypso alone holds him on her island for seven.
At home in Ithaca, Penelope puts off more than a hundred suitors by weaving a burial shroud for his father, Laertes, and unpicking it every night. Odysseus comes back dressed as a beggar. His old dog Argos knows him at once and dies, and his nurse knows him by a scar from a boar hunt. When Athena advises Telemachus she takes the shape of an old friend named Mentor, and that is where the English word comes from.
