The Giver Word Search
This Giver word search holds forty words from Lois Lowry's novel: Jonas, the Giver, baby Gabriel, Fiona and Asher, the Ceremony of Twelve, Sameness, Elsewhere and the sled that carries the first memory.
Lowry's book came out in 1993 and won the Newbery Medal the next year. Jonas lives in a community that has given up weather, hills and color for Sameness. Every child turning twelve is handed a lifelong job at the Ceremony of Twelve, and Jonas is named the Receiver of Memory, the one person who will hold the memories of the world before. The first memory the Giver passes him is a ride on a sled down a snowy hill.
Soon Jonas sees flashes of red, first in an apple and then in Fiona's hair. He stops taking the daily pill that suppresses the stirrings, and he learns what release means when he watches his father, a Nurturer, put to death the smaller of two newborn twins. Ten years earlier a girl named Rosemary had trained as Receiver and asked to be released. Jonas leaves on a bicycle with Gabriel, the baby his family has been caring for.
