Three of the monsters are borrowed from a rulebook. Demogorgon, Mind Flayer and Vecna are all creatures out of Dungeons and Dragons, which the boys are playing in the first scene of the first episode, and the show uses that as its naming convention: the characters do not know what they are facing, so they call it after the nearest thing in the Monster Manual.
The soundtrack has had effects outside the show. Kate Bush released Running Up That Hill in 1985 and it reached number three in Britain; after it played over a scene in 2022 it went to number one there for the first time, thirty-seven years later, and into the American top five, which it had never previously entered at all. It made her the oldest woman ever to top the UK chart.
