Police Word Search

This police word search holds the ranks, tools and language of law enforcement: the officer with a badge, the patrol in a squad car, the detective and the sergeant, the fingerprint lifted from a scene and Scotland Yard, the most famous police headquarters in the world.

Modern policing began in London in 1829, when Home Secretary Robert Peel founded the Metropolitan Police. Londoners nicknamed the officers bobbies and peelers after him, and the first headquarters backed onto a street called Great Scotland Yard, which gave the force its other name. A detective branch followed in 1842, and in 1901 the Yard began filing criminals by their fingerprints.

Many police titles are older than police forces. A constable began as the count of the stable, a royal officer in charge of horses. Marshal goes back to an old Frankish word for a horse servant, and lieutenant is French for one who holds the place of a superior officer. A trooper was first a cavalry soldier.
