Nature Word Search
This nature word search gathers forty things from outdoors: the forest and the meadow, a river, a waterfall and a canyon, moss and fern underfoot, an acorn from the oak, and the squirrel, fox and owl that live among them.
A squirrel buries hundreds of acorns in the fall and digs up most of them by smell and memory in winter. The ones it forgets sprout in spring, which makes the squirrel one of the oak's best planters. Ferns and mosses are far older than any flower. Neither one makes seeds: ferns spread by spores from the brown dots under their fronds, and mosses have no true roots, holding on to rock and bark with fine threads.
A rainbow only appears with the sun behind you and rain in front, because each raindrop bends sunlight and splits it into colors at an angle of about 42 degrees. An owl cannot move its eyes in their sockets, so it turns its whole head instead, as far as 270 degrees, thanks to extra bones in its neck. John Muir, who walked a thousand miles from Kentucky to Florida in 1867, wrote that going out to the mountains was going home.
