National Parks Word Search

This national parks word search names forty American parks and the things you find in them: Yellowstone and Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and Zion, Acadia on the Maine coast, the Everglades and Denali, plus Old Faithful, the park ranger and the grizzly.

Yosemite was protected before any national park existed. In 1864, in the middle of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln signed a law handing Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias to California to be kept for public use. It became a national park in 1890. Old Faithful, in Yellowstone, got its name from an expedition in 1870 that watched it go off again and again, and it still erupts roughly every hour and a half.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas published The Everglades: River of Grass in 1947, the same year the park was dedicated, and her title changed how people saw the place: not a swamp to drain but a slow, wide river. In Sequoia National Park stands the General Sherman tree, the largest tree on Earth by volume. A saguaro cactus can live more than a century and may not grow its first arm until it is fifty or older.
