Light travels about 186,000 miles a second and needs nothing to travel through, so sunlight reaches Earth in a little over eight minutes. Sound is a vibration passed from particle to particle; it needs a medium, goes silent in a vacuum, and in air moves at roughly 767 miles an hour. That gap is why thunder follows the flash: count the seconds and divide by five to get the distance in miles.
In 1666 Isaac Newton passed sunlight through a glass prism and split it into a rainbow of colors, then used a second prism to turn the colors back into white light. The Doppler effect, described by the Austrian Christian Doppler in 1842, is why a siren's pitch drops as it passes. The decibel is named after Alexander Graham Bell, and a healthy young ear hears from about 20 to 20,000 hertz.
