Forty words for what every element is made of: the nucleus, the proton and the neutron packed inside it, the electron in its orbital, the isotope and the ions, the atomic number, and the scientists who worked it out, from Democritus to Bohr.
Democritus, around 400 BC, reasoned that matter could not be cut forever and called the last piece atomos, uncuttable. John Dalton brought the idea back as science in the early 1800s. J. J. Thomson found the electron in 1897 and pictured the atom as a plum pudding, a positive blob with electrons scattered through it like fruit.
That model lasted until the gold foil experiment. In 1909 students of Ernest Rutherford fired alpha particles at thin gold leaf, and a few bounced almost straight back, which only made sense if nearly all the mass sat in a tiny, dense nucleus. If an atom were the size of a football stadium, its nucleus would be about the size of a pea at the center. Niels Bohr gave each electron a fixed energy level in 1913, and James Chadwick found the neutron in 1932.
