States of Matter Word Search
This puzzle holds the vocabulary of the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas and plasma, and the changes between them, melting, freezing, condensation, sublimation and deposition, along with the particles that make the difference.
What sets the states apart is how the particles move. In a solid they vibrate in place, so it keeps its shape and volume; in a liquid they slide past each other, so it keeps its volume but takes the shape of its container; in a gas they fly apart and fill whatever holds them. Dry ice skips the liquid stage, turning straight from solid to gas at minus 109 degrees Fahrenheit, which is sublimation.
Plasma, a gas so hot that electrons are stripped from their atoms, is the most common state of visible matter in the universe, because it is what stars are made of; on Earth it glows in neon signs and lightning. Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature. Some liquids have such high viscosity that it is hard to tell: a funnel of pitch at the University of Queensland has dripped fewer than ten times since 1927.
