Physics Word Search
Forty words from physics: its big ideas, gravity, momentum, relativity, quantum and entropy, its branches from mechanics to thermodynamics, and the people whose names became its units, Newton, Joule, Watt and Kelvin among them.
Isaac Newton published his laws of motion and his law of universal gravitation together in the Principia in 1687. Michael Faraday, a bookbinder's apprentice with little schooling, discovered in 1831 that a moving magnet makes an electric current, and James Clerk Maxwell wrote the equations in the 1860s that showed light is an electromagnetic wave. In 1905 Albert Einstein published four papers, including special relativity and the idea that mass and energy are two forms of the same thing.
Many units are named after physicists: the newton for force, the joule for energy, the watt for power, the volt after Alessandro Volta, the hertz after Heinrich Hertz and the kelvin after Lord Kelvin. Written out, the unit takes a small letter and the person keeps the capital. The name Big Bang came from Fred Hoyle, who used it on BBC radio in 1949 while arguing that the theory was wrong.
