Necromancy has drifted a long way from its meaning. The Greek is nekros and manteia, divination by consulting the dead, which was a specific and fairly narrow practice. Medieval Latin speakers misheard the first half as niger, black, turned it into nigromantia, and the word came to mean dark magic in general. Raising an army of skeletons is a much later addition.

A good deal of the rest of the furniture arrived through one man's reading. Tolkien was a philologist working on Old English and Old Norse, and the dwarf names in The Hobbit, Thorin, Fili, Kili, Dwalin and the others, are lifted directly from a list in the Old Norse Voluspa. So is Gandalf, which means staff-elf. The genre's standard cast is a thirteenth-century Icelandic poem, reused.
