These are often called soft skills, and they travel from job to job in a way that knowing one machine does not. In 1991 the US Department of Labor published the SCANS report, short for the Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills, which asked employers what they needed from new workers. Alongside reading and math it listed personal qualities such as responsibility, self-management and integrity, and the ability to work with others.
Some of the words have sharp roots. Punctual comes from the Latin punctum, a point, so a punctual worker arrives on the point of the hour. Integrity shares a root with integer, the Latin word for whole: a person of integrity is the same person whether or not the boss is watching. Attendance records are one of the first things a supervisor checks on a new hire.
