Electricity and Magnetism Word Search

This puzzle covers both halves of the unit: the circuit in series or parallel, current, voltage and resistance, the battery, the switch and the bulb, and the magnetic side, poles that attract or repel, the compass and the electromagnet.

The two were thought to be separate until 1820, when the Danish scientist Hans Christian Oersted saw a compass needle swing beside a wire carrying current. Michael Faraday turned it around in 1831, moving a magnet through a coil of wire to make a current, and every generator and turbine in a power plant still works that way. A lodestone is a natural magnet, a piece of the iron mineral magnetite, and Chinese sailors steered by magnetized needles by the 1100s.

Benjamin Franklin flew his kite in a thunderstorm in 1752 to show that lightning is electricity, and he went on to invent the lightning rod. A single bolt can carry hundreds of millions of volts. In 1882 Thomas Edison opened the Pearl Street Station in Manhattan, the first central power plant in the United States, lighting a few square blocks. A fuse protects a circuit by melting when the current grows too large.
