This Edgar Allan Poe word search gathers forty words from his poems and tales: the Raven and its Nevermore, Annabel Lee, the house of Usher, the pendulum, the cask of Amontillado, Dupin and the Rue Morgue.
Poe was born in Boston in 1809 and lost both parents before he was three. A Richmond merchant, John Allan, took him in but never adopted him, and the boy kept the name as his middle one. He went to West Point, got himself dismissed within a year, and later married his young cousin Virginia Clemm. She died of tuberculosis in 1847, and many readers hear her in Annabel Lee, the last poem he finished.
The Murders in the Rue Morgue, from 1841, is usually called the first modern detective story. Its hero, C. Auguste Dupin, solves the crime by reasoning alone, and the killer turns out to be an orangutan. The Raven made Poe famous in 1845, yet he was never far from poverty. He died in Baltimore in 1849 at forty, after being found delirious in the street, and the cause is still argued over. The city's football team, the Ravens, is named for his poem.
