Carnival Word Search
This carnival puzzle holds 40 words from the festivals held before Lent around the world: Rio and its samba schools, the carnival mask of Venice, the steelpan of Trinidad, Fasching in Cologne, the Gilles of Binche and Mardi Gras.
The word carnival is usually traced to the Latin carne levare, to put away meat, because the feasting comes right before the forty days of Lent, when many Christians gave up meat. It ends on Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras in French, and Lent starts the next morning, on Ash Wednesday. In Venice, masks such as the plain white bauta let nobles and servants mix in the street without being known; the carnival faded after the republic fell in 1797 and was revived in 1979.
Rio's samba schools parade through the Sambadrome, a stadium designed for them by Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 1984. Trinidad gave carnival the steelpan, hammered out of oil drums in the 1930s and 1940s, and its celebration opens before dawn with Jouvert. In Binche, Belgium, hundreds of men dressed as Gilles, in wax masks and tall ostrich feather hats, dance through the town throwing oranges to the crowd.
