The ring is round for a practical reason. Philip Astley, a cavalryman turned trick rider, marked out a circle in a London field in 1768 and found that riding a constant curve threw him outward against the horse, which made standing on its back possible. He settled on a diameter of about forty-two feet as the tightest circle that still worked, and circus rings have been roughly that size ever since.
The calliope is the loudest instrument anyone has put on a parade. Steam forced through locomotive whistles, played from a keyboard, it carried for miles across a nineteenth-century town and told everybody the circus had arrived. It could not be tuned once it was hot, the player wore gloves against the heat, and nobody has ever managed to make one quiet.
