Beowulf Word Search
This Beowulf word search pulls forty words from the Old English epic: the hero Beowulf, the monster Grendel, King Hrothgar and his hall Heorot, loyal Wiglaf, the dragon and its hoard, and the kenning.
The poem runs about 3,180 lines and survives in a single manuscript, now in the British Library, whose edges were scorched in a library fire in 1731. Nobody knows who composed it, and scholars date it anywhere from the 700s to around the year 1000. The action never touches England. Beowulf, a Geat from what is now southern Sweden, sails to Denmark to rid Hrothgar of Grendel, a creature the poet says descends from Cain.
He tears off Grendel's arm with his bare hands, then follows Grendel's mother into her lake, where his borrowed sword Hrunting fails and he kills her with a giant's blade he finds on the wall. Fifty years later, as king, he fights a dragon woken by a thief who stole a cup from its treasure. He dies of the wound and is burned on a pyre. The verse pairs alliterating half-lines split by a pause, and calls the sea the whale-road.
