The oldest written unicorn comes from Ctesias, a Greek doctor at the Persian court around 400 BC, who described wild asses in India with a single horn on the forehead and said that drinking from the horn protected against poison. Marco Polo, in Sumatra, met what he took to be unicorns and was disappointed: they were rhinoceroses, which he called very ugly brutes.
Medieval traders sold narwhal tusks as unicorn horns, for more than their weight in gold. The tusk is a tooth that grows through the upper lip of the male whale, spiraling to the left, and can pass nine feet. The unicorn is the national animal of Scotland, and since 1603, when James VI of Scotland also became king of England, a unicorn has stood beside the English lion on the royal coat of arms.
