Pirates Word Search
This pirates puzzle holds 40 words from the real Golden Age of Piracy: Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Calico Jack and Ching Shih, the Jolly Roger, the cutlass and the galleon, the quartermaster and Port Royal.
That age ran roughly from the 1650s to the 1730s, mostly in the Caribbean and off the American coast. Blackbeard, whose real name was probably Edward Teach, blockaded the port of Charleston in 1718 and was killed that same year off Ocracoke, North Carolina; the wreck of his flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge, was found near Beaufort in 1996. A pirate crew elected its captain, and the quartermaster, also elected, shared out the plunder.
Anne Bonny and Mary Read sailed with Calico Jack Rackham until their capture off Jamaica in 1720. The most powerful pirate of all was Ching Shih, who commanded hundreds of ships in the South China Sea in the early 1800s and in 1810 gave up piracy in exchange for a pardon, keeping her fortune. A privateer did the same work with a license from a government to attack its enemies.
