Michael was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, the eighth of ten children of Joseph and Katherine Jackson. He sang lead in the Jackson 5 with his brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon, and once they signed with Motown their first four singles all reached number one, starting with I Want You Back in 1970.
Thriller, made with the producer Quincy Jones and released in 1982, is the best-selling album of all time. Michael first did the moonwalk on television in 1983, during Billie Jean on the Motown 25 special, and the long Thriller video, with its dancing zombies, became the first music video chosen for the National Film Registry. He even patented the shoes behind his famous forward lean.
