This music genres puzzle holds 40 styles, from rock and pop to jazz, blues, reggae, hip hop, bluegrass, bossa nova, zydeco and ragtime, several of which started in one city and spread around the world.
Some of these have a known birthday. Hip hop is usually dated to August 11, 1973, when DJ Kool Herc played a back-to-school party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx and stretched the drum breaks of funk records for the dancers. Motown began in Detroit in 1959, when Berry Gordy borrowed $800 from his family, and its name is short for Motor Town. Bluegrass is named after Bill Monroe's band from Kentucky, the Blue Grass Boys.
Ragtime is the oldest of them. Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag, published in 1899, was sold as sheet music to families with a piano in the parlor. Bossa nova, Portuguese for new trend, came out of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s with Joao Gilberto's soft guitar, and zydeco is the dance music of Louisiana Creoles, built on the accordion and the rubboard, a washboard worn like a vest.
