Music Theory Word Search

This music theory puzzle holds 40 terms from the first years of lessons: the staff, the treble clef and bass clef, the key signature and time signature, the scale, the interval, the octave, the triad and the tonic.

Much of this vocabulary goes back to Guido of Arezzo, an Italian monk who trained singers around the year 1025. He named the notes ut, re, mi, fa, sol and la after the first syllables of six lines of a hymn to John the Baptist, each line starting one step higher than the last. Ut later became do, and the lines he drew to fix the pitches grew into the modern staff.

The octave has a physical meaning. A note an octave higher vibrates exactly twice as fast, so the A that orchestras tune to, 440 vibrations a second, sits an octave below an A at 880. A major scale follows the same pattern of steps from any starting note: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. Stack its first, third and fifth notes and you have a major triad, C, E and G in the key of C.
