The name is Danish and the coincidence is real. Ole Kirk Christiansen contracted leg godt, play well, into LEGO in 1934 for his wooden toy workshop; only later did anyone point out that lego in Latin means I gather or I put together. The company treats that as a happy accident rather than a plan.
The stud-and-tube brick was patented on 28 January 1958, and the tolerance is the whole business. A brick moulded that year still clips onto one moulded this year, because the parts are made to within about two hundredths of a millimeter; the company rejects roughly eighteen bricks per million. One more oddity from the same production line: counted by number of units, LEGO is the largest tyre manufacturer in the world.
