The word is a shortened toy horse. A hobby was a small horse, then the wooden one children rode, and by the 1600s "to ride your hobby horse" meant to go on at length about a private enthusiasm nobody else shared. Sterne uses it that way throughout Tristram Shandy. The insult wore off, the horse dropped away, and what was left is the ordinary English word for something you do because you want to.
Origami is a plainer compound: ori for folding and kami for paper. It became a mass pastime in Japan only once paper was cheap enough to waste, in the Edo period, and the modern form owes most of its complexity to one man, Akira Yoshizawa, who worked out in the 1950s the diagramming system that every folding book still uses.
