Graduation Word Search

This graduation word search holds forty words from commencement day: the cap and gown, the tassel and the diploma, the valedictorian and salutatorian, the honors cord and stole, and the hat toss at the very end.

Caps and gowns come from the universities of medieval Europe, where students and teachers wore long robes and hoods, partly to keep warm in cold stone halls. American colleges agreed on a shared code for gowns, hoods and colors in 1895, and it is still the basis of what graduates wear. The flat square cap is called a mortarboard because it looks like the board a bricklayer holds mortar on.

The march played as graduates file in is Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, written by Edward Elgar in 1901. It was played when Elgar received an honorary degree from Yale in 1905, and American schools took it up from there. The titles are Latin: the valedictorian says farewell, from valedicere, and the salutatorian gives the greeting, from salutare. Cum laude means with praise, and commencement means a beginning, not an end.
