Forty words for a birthday party: the cake and the candles, the balloons, streamers and confetti, the presents in their wrapping paper and ribbon, the pinata, and the goody bag to take home at the end.
The song everyone sings started as a classroom greeting. Sisters Mildred and Patty Hill, teachers in Louisville, Kentucky, published the tune in 1893 as Good Morning to All, and the birthday words were set to it later. For decades a music company collected royalties on it, until a federal judge ruled in 2015 that its claim to the lyrics did not hold, and the song has been free to use ever since.
Candles on the cake go back at least to 18th-century Germany, where a child's Kinderfest cake carried one candle for each year and one more for the year to come. Making a wish before blowing them all out in one breath comes from an old belief that the smoke carries the wish upward.
