This dragons puzzle holds 40 words from dragon legends: the dragon, the two-legged wyvern and the serpent wyrm, a hoard of treasure, Saint George, Smaug, Fafnir, Quetzalcoatl and the real Komodo.
European and Chinese dragons are very different animals. In Europe the dragon breathes fire, guards gold and gets killed by a hero: Beowulf dies fighting one after a thief steals a cup from its hoard, and Sigurd kills Fafnir and, tasting its blood, can understand the birds. J. R. R. Tolkien drew on both stories for Smaug in The Hobbit in 1937. In China the dragon is wise and lucky, brings rain and rules over water, and it is the only mythical animal among the twelve of the zodiac.
The red dragon on the flag of Wales appears in Welsh stories written down more than a thousand years ago and became the official national flag in 1959. Saint George, the patron saint of England, was said to have saved a princess from a dragon. The Komodo dragon is real: a lizard from a few Indonesian islands that can grow to ten feet, the largest lizard alive.
